Vacation island Menorca has worked hard to cultivate her image of a serene, peaceful destination over the years, and appeals to parents with toddlers, couples in their thirties and forties, and the older generation - and of all the holiday islands the take up of villa holidays is most likely in Menorca as opposed to hotel based ones.

There’s only one golf course in Menorca - Son Parc - which surprises a lot of tourists given how well known Spain is for golf holidays. But that’s typical Menorca - just one but it’s of championship quality, easily accessible from all of the island’s holiday resorts, and the Son Parc area has a good collection of hotels and villas to choose from.

Even more of a surprise was when news agencies started to report the arrival of Formula One teams on the island. No less than McLaren, Honda and Ferrari all sent their cars before the start of the F1 season to test.

But for Menorca, the peaceful Mediterranean holiday island, it was a pleasant surprise, and the world of F1 has been well and truly welcomed.

Locals watched on as Lewis Hamilton tested his McLaren at the Aeroclub de Mahon, perfect for straight line testing, which is why Menorca has been chosen by F1 teams - along with the Menorca weather. Local people are more used to seeing holidaymakers on their flights to Menorca in the summer at Mahon International Airport than the world’s best drivers at the nearby private airfield the F1 teams are using.

And perhaps some of the Menorca holidays magic rubbed off on Lewis in the first race of this years Grand Prix season - he won the Australian Grand Prix and set himself up to challenge for this year’s driver championship in the process.

Minorca Weather

And it’s not just McLaren and Lewis Hamilton who tested in Menorca - Ferrari did too, and maybe some of the holiday island’s magic rubbed off on them too as Massa won the third Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain.

And while the world of F1 might be new to Menorca, and Menorca new to F1 - the island does have some other fine sporting facilities to offer tourists when they visit for a holiday.

One example is the golf course at Son Parc. Although it is the only golf course on the island it is championship standard and for golfers it is ideal as it has closeby Menorca holiday villas, apartments and hotels, just a short stroll from the clubhouse. The course is a full 18 hole.

Menorca’s main holiday villages apart from Son Parc are Cala en Porter, Binibeca, Cala’n Bosch, Arenal, Es Castell, Punta Prima and Son Bou. Son Bou has the longest sandy beach in Menorca, while Cala En Porter has a good bay generally regarded as a safe swimming area, and is a favourite for families who take Menorca holidays.

The Menorca holidays market has been boosted recently from the island’s main UK market with the announcement from two different airlines that they are laying on extra flights this summer to Mahon Airport, not just from London Gatwick but other regional airports throughout the UK. Just an hour and a half flight away from the UK Menorca is ideally situated for a Mediterranean holiday, tourists either stay in one of the Menorca hotels, or alternatively have a villa holiday.

The peak months of the year for Menorca hotels and the holiday industry is, like many other holiday islands, July and August. But for people who can choose when to take their vacations, the best month to visit Menorca is June. The island is still quiet but all the holiday resorts are up and running, and good deals for flights to Menorca and villas as well as the Menorca hotels can be found in June. Other good times to visit are May, and for the end of the season anytime between the second week of September and the first week of October.

Watch out for who might be overtaking you in that Ferrari while on your Menorca vacation!

The writing is on the wall for low cost airlines operating out of the UK and other European countries as the Conservative Party - once a campaigner and implementer of lower taxes - has called for purchase tax to be introduced to domestic flights.

The tax would add up to 17.5 per cent on to the cost of a flight from one British city to another, but while flights to the European mainland and popular holiday islands such as Menorca aren’t specifically mentioned, one travel company believes the new policy will inevitably lead to higher fares for flights not just within Britain, but elsewhere too.

The Tory policy review calls for the UK to be a leader on green growth, noting that it was illogical for flights to attract less tax than cars and trains, with David Cameron, the Tory Party leader, saying that much of the report would be included in their manifesto at the next British General Election, which could be up to two years away, but could be within weeks rather than years.

‘It’s not so much that we’re convinced the Tories will win the next election and tax domestic flights’, say the travel company, ‘But by proposing new taxes on flights it leads the door open to the Labour Party, who are more likely to win, to use taxes on flights as a revenue raiser with no opposition from the Tories who are traditionally seen as the tax cutting party. We have no doubt that flights will be taxed a lot more in 2008 because the Tories have now made it a soft target for the British government of any political persuasion and the Treasury when they prepare their annual budgets.’

Citing Menorca as an example, the company points to the holiday industry on the island being a major employer, and the Menorca map changing over the years as new resorts have been built to accommodate additional visitors.

‘One of the other aspects of the report that is a worry for the holiday industry’, continues the travel company, ‘Is that new runways at Stansted, Gatwick and Heathrow Airports are all ruled out - all three airports serve London and the South-East of England. Any increased demand for example for Menorca holidays probably won’t be able to be met without increased capacity, inevitably leading to a consequence of higher prices overall.’

From the environmental lobby the Green Party described the proposals as ‘fiddling around the edges when what is needed is urgent and radical action’, adding that the Tory eco-taxes would hit the poorest in society hardest.

Citing Menorca as typical of the areas that could be affected most by additional flight taxes, the travel company takes the view that any downturn in visitor numbers and the volume of bookings for holidays and hotels in Menorca would hit an island that relies heavily on tourism.

The Spanish island is currently served by three UK airlines that offer scheduled flights, including one low cost carrier that offers cheap flights to Menorca. But there are a high number of holiday companies who offer chartered flights in the summer months, and these companies have helped reduced prices for holidaymakers visiting the island. Neighbouring island Majorca attracted most UK tourists for 2007, beating off competition from low cost destinations in Eastern Europe, and Menorca has also benefitted from an increase in visitor numbers.

Despite their geographical closeness and being part of the same group of islands, the Balearics, Menorca and Majorca attract a different type of tourist from each other, and with Ibiza the third of the islands each has its own appeal, and each her unique selling points when compared to each other.

Ibiza is known in Europe for her clubs and nightlife, with 18 to 30’s and their high disposable incomes preferring the island to quieter Majorca and Menorca. A survey by the island’s tourist board sprung a surpise for many in the hotels and holidays industry with a report showing of the three islands that Ibiza’s visitors spent more on their holidays than those in Majorca and on holiday in Menorca.

Majorca is a favourite holiday island for both the British and Germans, and as well as having a cosmopolitan feel to it offers both nightlife for the young with luxury hotels and villa holidays for older visitors. Plans are in place to build Spain’s top luxury hotel on the island.

The island of Menorca, also known as Minorca, is regarded as the quietest of the three holiday islands, and family orientated, with tourists just as likely to be taking a villa holiday with companies like James Villas as they are staying in a hotel or holiday apartment. The island is at her best in May and September when the island’s roads are quiet but everyone is geared up for the season.

The travel company concludes that all three islands would be affected detrimentally by any further increases in taxes on flights, and infrastructure improvements planned for the future might have to be reconsidered if the number of tourists visiting for a holiday comes down.

Menorca will be watching the British political scene with an unusual amount of interest in the year ahead!

What’s so special about spending holidays in Tuscany villas? There are many, many reasons we can tell you. Tuscany is a region of outstanding beauty, both in its natural and man-made structures. It is an enchanting place with the Tuscan people quite welcoming. The ambience alone of the region is enough to entice you to stay–at least longer than just a weekend.

It is also a treasure chest of historical finds and cultural resources. Spending a vacation in a Tuscany villa can be further enhanced by the fact that this region is known for its excellent local cuisine and equally exceptional wines. And what better way to take in all that Tuscany has to offer than to spend a comfortable time in one of the many villas in the region. Villas in Tuscany go from grand to fantastic. Some of them can even house very large parties for events like weddings and / or business congresses.

Your holiday in Tuscany villas can afford you all the luxury and convenience you can possibly dream of. This is far better than spending a few measly days in hotel that give does not give you that privacy and quiet time you might desire. Many tour and vacation packages offer a unique collection of self-catering holiday homes for you to use. Some of the more elaborate villas in Tuscany have swimming pools at your disposal. Others are more rustic and embedded deep into mountainous landscapes for those that seek quiet retreats. Others are situated into working vineyards or olive groves.

If you are thinking of spending your holidays in Tuscany, there are many that can be found in prime locations, in quality properties and with additional amenities like welcome gift packs upon your arrival and a first class service from a full luxury home staff. Perhaps, the first thing that you should do is scour the Internet as to where you want to spend your vacation in, how long you would like to stay and at what price range you are willing to pay for. Early reservations can actually help you earn discount in vacation packages.

If you are also thinking of a more active holiday in one of Tuscany’s villas, you may want to consult the different vacation offers (and even the villa owners or renters themselves) as to what activity they may offer while you are staying there. Some offer cooking courses, wine tasting trips, historical walking tours, religious walking tours, or adventure seeking. Holidays in Tuscany villas is synonymous with luxury, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t seek a bit of fun while you are relaxing. Check the calendar also for what possible holidays you can attend during your stay.

Tuscany holidays can be a blast, and certainly, everyone is invited to join. Unfortunately, during these holidays, the influx of tourists surge to incredible numbers, and without proper reservation, you just might find yourself out on the street, waiting in line among those seeking lodging in hotels and small apartments for rent. Your holiday in a Tuscan villa can also be penny-wise, especially if you book your stay during the off-peak tourist season. Frequent visitors also get discounts. Everything just seems special when you spend holidays in Tuscany villas.

I’m Looking for a special place to take the kids on holiday. Would prefer a villa/gite with large garden so there’s plenty of space for the kids to run around. If not we would consider staying on a holiday complex (lodges, apartments, chalets, bungalow) (not caravans or tents) as long as it’s surrounded by woods/greenery and activities for the kids ie, horse riding, biking, theme park, football, trampolining, beach, swimming pool etc.
Any suggestion please. Thankyou
